Weekly Roundup #92: Women's March and binging

Weekly Roundup #92: Women's March and binging

So I originally thought I had work Monday and didn’t see that my CEO had notified us Sunday night about the office being closed until I woke up Monday morning and put in my daily to-do list. So that was a great surprise! I walked the Women’s March on Saturday with two friends (which was over in an hour and a half, by the way…not even close to marches in the past. But I’m really glad we went because at least we were out there—even if it was 20 degrees and practically blizzarding! So, on Sunday, I fully leaned into a full day of doing nothing and it was magical. Then, Monday, when I realized I didn’t have to work, I got another full day of mostly nothing—though slightly more productive this time—and, as you’ll see below, I got through a LOT of shows and nearly one whole book. Has anyone read any good books lately? Drop them below!

xoxo,

Katie

Reading

Where the Crawdads Sing, Delia Owens. I know this was a best seller and all that, but, for some reason, I just wasn’t sure I’d like it. I think I was thinking it’d be dry and just a bunch of marsh descriptions that I don’t really care about. But I tore through this book on Monday (after realizing I actually had the day off lol)! I highly recommend it.

Her Sorority Sisters Suspected She Was Pregnant. What Did Emile Weaver Know? Elle. “With Americans’ deep ambivalence about non-procreative sex and female sexual desire, it’s not surprising that young women struggle to reveal their pregnancies.” The last paragraph was chilling.

Bond Touch Bracelets and the New Frontiers of Digital Dating, The New Yorker. Maybe this is just me, but I think this is stupid…I think it would end up being a cheap substitute for actually speaking. People would be like, oh, well, I “touched” them a bunch today and saw the weather in their area, so I can probably just catch up with them tomorrow. Seriously. That sounds dumb, but I know it would happen. It’s dangerous and I think you’d end up losing any intimacy you did have in that long-distance relationship. The only beneficial factor seems to be the part where you could let someone know you’re safe even if you’re not answering your phone/texts.

Julia Fox, Wonderland. Ok, after reading this and seeing Olivia Wilde’s praise, I really want to see Uncut Gems now. January 31st, people!!

Adam Sandler trolls academy with witty reaction to Oscars snubbing ‘Uncut Gems,’ Los Angeles Times. Lollll at Kathy Bates’ response.

Florence Pugh’s True Hollywood Fairy Tale, The New York Times.

After Losing My Sight, Struggling to Be Seen, The New York Times. It’s hard enough to be seen for your merits as a woman, much less as a blind woman who does, in fact, need to lean on others often in life.

‘Stop Manspreading!’: Queens Native Awkwafina Takes Over 7 Train Subway Announcement, NBC New York. This is amazing. Wish I actually went to Queens now.

Billie Eilish wrote and performed the new James Bond theme song. She's the youngest artist to do so, CNN. Um, hello. Of course, she did 👏🏼

Vanessa Hudgens & Austin Butler Reportedly Split After Nearly 9 Years, Refinery29. I’m not much of a celeb stanner, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I loved them 😢

Why Vanessa Hudgens And Austin Butler Decided To Split 'For Now,' Elle. Ok, my anxiety is a little soothed 😅 I figured it was something like this once I saw the headline.

Listening

Manic, Halsey. It’s ouuuuuutt!! And this is basically all I’m listening too so…yeah, I’m not adding anything else this week. ha.

Check out my Tunes 2020 highlight for all my most recent listens!

Watching

Dickinson, Apple TV+. I started this Sunday morning because I like Hailee Steinfeld and I had just downloaded Apple TV+ annd I was looking for something new to watch. And, wow, I binged this whole thing. I love this show. It reminded me how much I like Emily Dickinson’s poetry back in the day (and now I really want a book, so, if you’re looking for a gift for me…). It was also interesting, in light of having done the Women’s March only 24 hours prior, how little has really changed in nearly two centuries…well, I suppose not interesting as much as depressing.

The Witcher, Netflix. Ok, finally watched this and I’m so obsessed. Yennefer is the most beautiful human on this planet, it’s fine, and I need to know everything about the three main characters’ backstories, please. Like, what exactly happens in witcher trials? (Side note: how can people hate witchers when they are created to help rid normal people of creatures that are murdering them…it doesn’t make sense, but whatever.) Are Ciri’s parents’ REALLY dead? Oh, and if you haven’t watched this yet and are planning to, prepare for time jumps. It can be super confusing when a dead character shows up looking 30 years younger. Pay attention to the mentions of Cintra and Calanthe.

Atypical, Netflix. Also, finally watched this one and it’s sooo easy to binge. I’m already in Season 3 and I started this on Monday…help. Does anyone else hate Elsa?? I’m sorry, but I find her SO self-centered and obnoxious. I appreciate her struggles and know she has done everything for Sam, but, for instance, her favorite part of the week is clearly her peer group when everyone is forced to listen to her blather on for as long as she wants…Casey rocks though.

Loving

Having friends willing to go march with me in a literal snowstorm. That’s GRL PWR, y’all.
