Weekly Roundup #98: Dixie Chicks and garbage

Weekly Roundup #98: Dixie Chicks and garbage

Coming up on the end of these roundups, people, so soak them in for the next two weeks! Also, in light of all this coronavirus panic, please remember to wash your hands, don’t touch your face (you should try to do that anyways because #acne) and, most of all, do NOT PANIC. This is like the flu. People get the flu every year. People die from the flu every year. I say this not to be heartless, but to attempt to put things in perspective. If you do not have a compromised immune system and you get the coronavirus (or flu), you will likely recover in a short while. All these precautions are for those WITH compromised immune systems to protect THEM, so if that’s not you, stop buying out your local grocery’s hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Don’t be a dick.

Reading

Milkman, Anna Burns.

Halsey, pop's new firebrand: 'Nobody wants to be my friend. I'm drama by association,' The Guardian. I had totally forgotten reading about how she once had a miscarriage on stage, so when she alluded to losing a baby a few times in her latest album, I was almost proud of myself for understanding. Now, I just feel kind of dumb, but, either way, it’s an incredible thing to speak about. Also, this article made me love her even more than I already did, which is a LOT.

No Cell Signal, No Wi-Fi, No Problem. Growing Up Inside America’s ‘Quiet Zone,’ The New York Times. This is a crazy situation to imagine, but can you also imagine how much better off we’d all be?? Sure, some parents would worry if they had less ways to get a hold of their children, but, we’ve done it before. Ever heard of walkie talkies? Preapproved plans?

Dixie Chicks Announce First Album In 14 Years, 'Gaslighter,' Share Title Track, NPR. Ummmm, I can’t WAIT for this! I literally grew up on the Dixie Chicks—and if the album is anything like “Gaslighter,” oh, it’s gonna be good.

Life Isn’t Like the Movies (Even if You Write the Movies), The New York Times. I really enjoyed this one and was really hoping she was the writer behind It’s Complicated…she was 😊

Garbage Language: Why do corporations speak the way they do? Vulture. It was soooo much worse at my old job, I think we knew what our execs were saying only half the time—and the same probably went for them—but I did have to google “TB” after getting a bunch of TB invites on my calendar at my new job…

Fossil Corals Suggest a Mass Extinction Is On the Way: ‘It’s Like a Slow-Motion Car Crash,’ Newsweek. If this doesn’t scare the shit out of you, you have your head in the sand.

I Prepared for Everything, but Not Coronavirus on a Cruise Ship, The Atlantic. I haven’t really been stressed about the coronavirus, but then I watched the pandemic episode on Explained and…I admittedly did get a little worried. But then I talked to my dad, who’s a doctor living in California and not at all concerned…so here we are—back to being a little too blasé. However, there were so many little details in this story that you don’t think about —like what a cruise ship (whose journey is supposed to be over) will feed you, or the blankets you’ll sleep on. It reminds me that there are many kinds of detention centers, or quarantine if you will, and not all of them are as “good” as this writer had it…

Wes Anderson out-Wes Andersons himself with The French Dispatch trailer, CNET. I really want to see this.

UCLA's Nia Dennis wows with Beyoncé-themed gymnastics routine, Mashable. YAS, KWEEN!!! I love when gymnasts use modern music—I feel like that’s so rare until you get to these higher levels.

Take One Last Look at the (Many) Plastic Bags of New York, The New York Times. This was a weirdly very interesting piece.

Listening

Gaslighter, The Dixie Chicks. This has been stuck in my head since I first listened to it.

Firefly 2020 Official Playlist. Got this on repeat and I’m loving hearing all the new (to me, at least) artists I’ll be seeing, like Lucii.

Check out my Tunes 2020 highlight for all my most recent listens!

Watching

Never Worn White, Katy Perry. Ok, this was beautiful and she looks beautiful, and just wow.

The Morning Show, Apple+. I started this a couple months ago and just never went back to it, so I binged the whole season on Sunday and, damn. It was cringey, powerful and…I did not expect that ending. I was a mess. Highly recommend.
